The UN Convention on Biological Diversity will see delegates from more than 190 nations meet to discuss how to protect the world's wildlife and ecosystems from a number of threats such as pollution.

Organisers hope that the delegates will produce 20 targets to be met over the next ten years to help stop further damage to vital species and habitats. 

The other aim of the convention will be to set a percentage of the Earth's lands and oceans that must be protected. At the moment, 13 per cent of land and one per cent of open ocean is protected – it is hoped by the UN this could increase to 25 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

In April 2002, the delegates involved with the 2002 convention set targets to be met by 2010 – the targets were backed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the United Nations General Assembly.
